Media drawing on panel — Candice Alexander

This artwork reinterprets the 1531 A.D. miraculous image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, blending Catholic symbolism with Nahua (Aztec) meaning. Mary stands before radiant golden rays, her turquoise mantle covered in stars, and her rose-colored gown adorned with sacred floral motifs. She stands on the crescent moon, supported by an angel resembling the Nahua eagle-dancer, symbolizing divine authority and a messenger between heaven and earth. The four-petaled flower (Nahui Ollin) at her center indicates she is pregnant with the Divine One. Her visible hair signifies purity, and her slightly bent knee reveals she is in a gentle dancing pose—the Indigenous expression of prayer. Every detail conveyed an encoded message to the Indigenous world: she is the Mother of the True God. Candice Alexander preserves these symbols while adding Renaissance shading and texture, honoring both the historical icon and its spiritual depth.

The accompanying song for this mixed media artwork was created and curated by the artist. The artist used ambient tones and harmonies that enhance the experience of the mixed media piece. The music serves as an added layer of expression—modern, immersive, and fully aligned with the artist’s vision.  We hope you enjoy it!
