St. Ignatius stands between two forms of strength: the armor of the soldier he once was and the wisdom of the spiritual life he would come to embrace. His armor remains—worn and fractured, a symbol of protection that once seemed sufficient—while in his hands rests something quieter and ultimately more powerful: a book representing discernment, truth, and transformation.

The work explores the tension between steel and paper, structure and truth, appearance and outcome. Ignatius does not simply cast aside the armor; he comes to understand its limitations. His wound becomes the beginning of a new way of seeing, transforming a moment of physical vulnerability into one of profound spiritual awakening.

Through his story, the piece asks a broader question about the structures we trust to protect us: What happens when protection has a ceiling? Whether in the interior life or in the systems of care and accountability we create, the existence of structure alone does not guarantee that it fulfills its purpose.

He did not lay the armor down. He simply learned it could not protect what mattered most.
