Blessed Father Francis Xavier Seelos (1819–1867) By Candice D. Alexander
This Renaissance-inspired portrait honors Blessed Father Francis Xavier Seelos, a German-born Redemptorist priest remembered for his extraordinary compassion, humility, and devotion to those in need.
Arriving in America in 1843, Father Seelos dedicated his ministry to serving immigrants, the poor, and the sick. Known for his gentle spirit, powerful preaching, and gift for spiritual guidance, he brought hope and comfort to countless people.
In 1867, while ministering to victims of a devastating yellow fever epidemic in New Orleans, he contracted the disease himself and died at just 48 years old. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 2000.
Created through intricate, Da Vinci-inspired cross-hatching, this portrait captures his quiet strength and unwavering faith. The crucifix held close to his heart symbolizes a life surrendered to Christ, while the luminous halo reflects his enduring spiritual legacy.
