The Atchafalaya Basin is the largest river swamp in the United States, containing almost one million acres of the nations most significant bottomland hardwoods, swamps, bayous and backwater lakes. The basin begins near Simmesport, La., and stretches 140 miles southward to the Gulf of Mexico. Candice captures a sun setting over the basin, with the well-known cypress trees fixed over the water.
